Smartphones Launches SmartApp Platform Engine

Smartphones Technologies announced a new platform engine that supports apps on a variety of different devices, operating systems and App Stores. While App Stores are the hot new topic in mobile Internet, building and supporting apps on multiple platforms is logistically challenging. The SmartApp Platform Engine allows content owners to manage content on apps on the iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre, Android, BREW, J2ME, WAP and even Facebook.

The SmartApp Platform Engine allows content owners to dynamically publish, manage and update content on multiple apps across multiple platforms, with real time updates made from a single admin interface. For example, Smartphones’ College SuperFans app shares news, updates, schedules and message boards between multiple apps on different platforms. Customers using the College SuperFans Facebook app see the same news, scores, updates, polls, trivia questions and message boards as fans using College SuperFans BREW app on Verizon’s Get it Now phones. Verizon customers can reply to message board posts from Facebook members, and vice versa. Similarly, the same photos, videos, news, schedules and standings for the Lingerie Football League iPhone app in the iTunes App Store are available for customers using Lingerie Football League Blackberry and WAP applications.

“Building an iPhone app is fairly straightforward, since it’s one device with one operating system. Building the same app on Blackberry, Palm Pre, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, WAP, BREW and J2ME can be a logistical nightmare,” said Mike Merrill, Founder and CEO of Smartphones Technologies. “Smartphones greatly simplifies the process, offering dynamic content updates across multiple apps on different operating systems.”

The complexity of supporting dynamic content on multiple devices stems from the multitude of different handsets developers must support. For example, a BREW app alone may have 60+ different handset builds. Every handset is ported separately and submitted to NSTL for testing before Qualcomm certifies it and the wireless carrier publishes it, so making changes after the fact is very costly. Add multiple handsets for Blackberry, Palm Pre, Android, WAP and J2ME, and the complexity increases exponentially.
